SWEPT AWAY IN THE CALIFORNIA FIRESTORMS WITHOUT A TRACE
Thousands of animals have either perished or are in need of shelter, food, and medical treatment.
HAVE A DISASTER PLAN IN PLACE FOR YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR ANIMALS

WILDFIRES TEARING FAMILIES AND ANIMALS FROM THEIR HOMES
The six wildfires tearing through Southern California have burned up 175,000 acres and counting. A reported 90,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.
Heroic individuals are working around the clock to save animals from these harsh conditions — and the good news is you can help.
“Pray for the lost and stray”
Randy Friedman, spokesperson for Ventura County Animal Services — in the area where the Thomas Fire has spread across 148,000 acres — said that the shelter has taken in far more animals than usual in order to provide a “safe space” for the community’s pets.
That includes those who are lost and stray and those who need refuge while their human family members are evacuated. VCAS’ usual capacity is about 400 pets; they are now caring for more than 1,000, both at the regular shelter and at the evacuation shelter at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.
“That’s our main mandate,” Friedman said. “To keep people’s pets safe.”
To help in this mission, VCAS is maintaining a fire wish list, updated regularly as needs change. They’re also posting updates on the VCAS Facebook page.
THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF VENTURA County are on the front lines along with firefighters
1TAC sends prayers and thanks to the hardworking people at the Humane Society for all they are doing to save and care for our animals. 1TAC Response Team last week delivered $20,000 worth of TC1200 Tactical Flashlights and HL1200 Headlamps to the Red Cross Shelter and worked with their teams to get rechargeable batteries installed in all the units and rebox them for distribution to all the fire victims, firefighters, and other emergency workers.
1TAC RESPONSE TEAM WORKS CLOSELY WITH RED CROSS providing tactical Flashlights and Headlamps to Disaster Relief Efforts.

WHEN THE MEDIA HYPE IS OVER
When the media tells stories of massive wildfires sweeping across the countryside, they highlight the number of first responders on the scene, the widespread evacuation orders, the amount of structures in harm’s way, and the running total the emergency is costing the state. Yet the victims who are now homeless, the animals who called those wooded canyons or forested hillsides home, are often forgotten.
“The Forgotten Victims“
Wildfires are dangerous for animals in any circumstance, but since firestorms create their own wind patterns and rapidly whip across vast stretches of undeveloped land in all directions, the unpredictability gives native wildlife little chance to escape. Birds attempt to fly out of harm’s way, but the battling winds and the blistering heat from the flames disorient and exhaust them. Mammals must run, often over burning grasses and through smoke-filled air.
Nearly 40 horses died after being trapped in a barn that caught fire from embers caused by the Creek Fire at Rancho Padilla in Sylmar.
Two workers said the smell of smoke woke them up around 4 a.m. They ran to the barns and saw the roofs were on fire.
The ranch staff said they wanted to open the barn doors so the horses could escape, but the fire had become too intense. Nearly 40 of those horses burned to death, but about six were rescued.
One of those horses, named Chaparra, suffered the most severe burn injuries and is being treated at Pierce College around the clock.
